Victor Borer of Albion was honored as the 2009 “Living Veteran” during the Veterans Day program on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Boone Central High School.
Vic served in the Army from June 1941 through Nov. 1945 as a Staff Sergeant in Company H of the 63rd Infantry. He served in Hawaii, New Guinea and the Philippines. He directed a machine gun crew in many battles in New Guinea and the Philippines, and at the Battle of Luzon, where he was wounded.
He received the Silver Star for carrying a comrade to safety under fire. He also received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Bronze Service Arrow Heads, the 6th Infantry Division Medal, the New Guinea Battle Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Combat Infantry Medal and the Expert Rifle Bar.
Dave Olson, a veteran of the Iraq war and ag education teacher at Boone Central, was guest speaker for the program. He presented a from-the-heart talk about the importance of thanking and appreciating the service of all veterans.
