Meeting Gen. Petraeus a highlight
Albion’s Norm and Donna Smith have traveled to many parts of the United States to meet with Norm’s World War II compatriots and commemorate important milestones.
Their mid-April trip to Washington, DC, will rank among the most meaningful.
The Smiths participated in a commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps during World War II. It was held in the nation’s capital April 14 and 15 as an opportunity to thank and honor those who participated in the liberation.
Among the 120 veterans present, Norm was the only one representing the 101st Airborne Division, and one of his purposes in attending was to provide documentation that the 101st had liberated Landsberg Camp, a Nazi labor camp for Jewish prisoners.
One of the highlights for the Smiths was an opportunity to meet General David Petraeus, who led the 101st Airborne during the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom and now serves as commander of the U.S. Central Command.
“That was totally unplanned and unexpected,” said Norm.
