A tie vote in the Democratic race for Boone County Commissioner, District 3, was one of the highlights of the primary election Tuesday, May 11.
Incumbent Hank Thieman and challenger Ken Luettel each received 81 votes. County Clerk Kathy Thorberg said there will be a recount in the race. The canvassing board will meet Thursday to review the election results.
In the only other contested race at the county level, incumbent District Court Clerk Ellen L. Hirsch won re-election on the Republican ballot, defeating challenger Mandy Wiseman 446 to 246.
A field of seven candidates for Cedar Rapids School Board was reduced to six in the primary election. Three school board seats are up for election this year. Candidates advancing to the general election, and their vote totals, are Tom McPhillips (129), Lisa Kennedy (124), Brian Swerczek (113), Bill Robinson (89), Matt Paulsen (81) and Mark A. Zentner (64). Debbie Braun received 55 vortes and will not advance to the general election.
The Village of Petersburg approved the Keno lottery issue by just 13 votes, with 59 in favor and 46 against.
