While facing difficult competition precluded the Boone Central softball team from adding to its season win total this past week, the 8-9 Cardinals should benefit from the experience as they prepare for conference and district tournaments.
Boone Central faced its biggest 2010 challenge to date September 14, traveling to Wayne to face a Blue Devil team ranked 2nd in Class C. Led by standout pitcher Cassy Miller, Wayne blanked the Cardinals 8-0 in five innings.
“The girls played a great game. Wayne hurt us with a grand slam – they have great hitters,” commented BC Coach Cassie Olson. “I was pleased with how the girls kept their heads up – they truly had fun playing the game.”
Wayne’s big blast by Caitlin Fehringer came in the second inning, giving the Blue Devils a 6-0 lead. Meanwhile, Miller shut the Cards down, allowing just three base hits.
The Cardinals got off to a poor start at Wisner Thursday and were unable to mount a rally in a 7-2 loss to Wisner-Pilger.
The Gators scored three runs in the first inning and led 5-0 after two frames.
“We started out with a tough inning and couldn’t seem to get out of that funk,” said Olson. “We made good contact at the plate, but overall, couldn’t seem to find the holes.”
