From domination to near disaster to exhilarating rally, Friday night was a roller-coaster of action and emotions as the Boone Central Cardinals defeated visiting Wayne 28-21 in Nebraska Class C1 high school football at the athletic field in Albion.
The young Cardinals were in complete control for most of three quarters, building a 20-0 lead before several miscues helped Wayne storm from behind to take a 21-20 edge with 3:05 to play.
Undaunted, sophomore QB Tanner Mazour did his best ‘Cool Hand Luke’ imitation, using just over two minutes to march Boone Central 95 yards for the winning touchdown with six consecutive pass completions.
“Give Wayne credit for playing hard and taking advantage of some breaks that went their way,” said Boone Central Coach Arnie Johnson, whose team improved to 2-1 with Friday’s win.
“I was very impressed by the lack of panic we saw in our team at the end of the game,” Johnson praised. “We put together the best plays we had for that final drive and the kids ran them almost to perfection.
“We made some mistakes, but overcame them by the effort that was given.”
