Boone Central had five wrestlers place in the top three of their weight classes, led by 112-pound champion Bobby Stopak, on the way to a fifth-place finish in the 2011 Mid-State Conference tournament Saturday at Norfolk Catholic High School.
Jackson Meyer was runner-up at 103 pounds, while Scott Joe (119), Jacob Meyer (135) and Mitchell Patzel (140) placed third.
Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge said it was his young squad’s best performance of the season.
“We had an abundance of individual and team positives in this meet,” Bonge commented. “From top to bottom, this is the best we have wrestled. We won every match we were favored in plus three we were not. That is a good thing. Now we need to carry that momentum into the district meet.”
Along with the medalists, a number of Cardinals achieved ‘firsts’ in the Mid-State competition.
“Bobby was our first tournament champ of the season,” Bonge noted. “This was Mitch’s first varsity medal and Matt won his first varsity match of the season.
“With those first-time happenings, Bobby, Mitch and Matt share our ‘Wrestler of the Meet’ award.”
One of the highlights of the tournament for Boone Central was the opening round of consolations where Cardinals recorded back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back pins.
“We had a great first round consolation, winning 5-of-6 matches with five pins,” Bonge acknowledged. “Cody Mangus got the roll started with a come-from-behind pin and Sean Soll, Matt, Jon Christo and Kody Sock finished it off.
“In winning his title, Bobby dominated Solorio of Madison,” he praised. “They had split four previous matches, all very close. That was not the case this time as Bobby dominated 14-0 to bring home the gold.
“Jackson broke open a 2-1 semi-final match with a reversal and pin. In the final, he opened strong with a takedown of the Class C #5 man, but couldn’t keep it going.
“Scott, Jake and Mitch all got their bronze with pins.”
