Throw out the records, the occasion and the setting. Whenever Boone Central and Pierce meet in boys basketball, you know the contest will be a knock-down, drag-out affair featuring defense, defense … and more defense.
Such was the case Tuesday, Feb. 22, as Pierce edged upset-minded Boone Central 37-35 in the C1-8 Sub-District at Norfolk High School.
In a game of ebb and flow, with each team enjoying stretches of slim leads, the outcome came down to the final minute of play as the Bluejays used a late steal and basket to provide the game-winning points and BC came up empty in its final chances to tie or win.
Pierce (17-7) advanced to the C1-8 final while Boone Central concluded the 2010-11 season 9-14.
“We felt we had prepared well for Pierce. This was the third time we played them this season and, with each game, we made improvements in many areas,” commented Cardinal Coach Dan Zoucha. “We also knew this would be a defensive battle in which each team would have a tough time scoring.
“We started out well. Our energy was outstanding and our players showed a lot of purpose and determination. Up at half, we felt good but knew we would have to put together a solid second half to hold Pierce off.
“Over the past seven games, we have turned the ball over less and committed fewer fouls. This was again the case in this game,” Zoucha noted. “Having the ball in our hands at the end of the game, things just did not fall our way.”
