Boone Central concluded its 2011 regular season in track & field by hosting the annual Jerry Seier Memorial Quad Tuesday, May 3, in Albion.
With a number of Cardinal athletes competing on a limited basis in the event that falls between the tough Mid-State Conference Championships and this week’s district meet, Boone Central finished second in girls team scoring and third in the boys standings.
A strong Scotus girls squad scored 143 points to defeat Boone Central (63), Lakeview (30) and Elkhorn Valley (11). Scotus also won the boys competition with 106 points. Lakeview (74) was second, BC (53) third and Elkhorn Valley (25) fourth.
School Record Set
Cardinal athletes did have some highlights, however, compiling seven event victories and establishing a school record for the second straight meet.
One week after junior Jaime Kennedy set the Boone Central standard in the 100 meter dash (12.4), freshman Jade Gottier broke the BC record in the 800 meter run with a winning time of 2:30.6.
“After a heavy weekend of conference track, we backed off many of our kids in preparation for the district meet,” acknowledged Cardinal Coach Kris Pestel. “It was finally a beautiful day for a track meet and we are still having kids make some great improvements.
“We have a little time now to heal up some nagging injuries and prepare for the district meet Thursday.”
Joining Gottier as individual Boone Central event winners were Terri Molt (triple jump, 31-3¾), Brody Kelley (3200, 10:39.1) and Cole Luettel (high jump, 6-1). Luettel’s leap and Kelley’s 3200 time were new season bests for the Albion News coverage area.
The Cardinal girls added a victory in the 4×400 meter relay (4:10.7) and the BC boys won the 4×400 relay (3:35.1) and 4×800 relay (8:47.5).
