A week that began with much promise for the Cornerstone Legion Baseball Juniors ended with a bit of disappointment Sunday as visiting PWG fashioned two late-inning rallies to win both ends of a doubleheader at the Albion Sports Complex.
Earlier in the week, Cornerstone had defeated two other Junior foes – York and Wood River – sandwiched around a loss to the York Legion Seniors.
The 2-3 mark gives the local Juniors a 4-6 overall season record going into play tonight (June 15) at Neligh.
Conerstone Legion Baseball opened a busy six-day stretch with an impressive 10-2 thumping of the York Gold (Juniors) June 7 at York.
The Albion squad got all the runs it would need in the first two innings. Calvin Koziol and Skyler Weber drew consecutive one-out walks in the first and Bryce Paulson’s two-out double scored both runners. Cornerstone loaded the bases in the second as Justin Rasmussen was hit by a pitch, Logan Olson singled and Koziol drew another walk. Weber pushed one run home with another base on balls and Paulson collected two more RBI with a two-out single. Derek Gentrup followed with an RBI base hit to give Albion a 6-0 lead.
The Cornerstone Juniors were no match for the York Blues (Seniors) in a 13-1 four-inning loss.
The older squad jumped on Albion starter Koziol early, sending 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and building a 8-0 lead. Cornerstone’s only run came in the third when Groenke led off with a single and scored on Olson’s two-out base hit.
Cornerstone bounced back June 9 by thrashing host Wood River 15-0 in five innings.
The Albion Juniors started the rout with Bode’s RBI single and a run-scoring double by Gentrup in the first and added two more in the second with Groenke and Koziol crossing the plate and Weber collecting an RBI.
Sunday’s doubleheader at the Albion Sports Complex turned into a case of “what could have been” for the Cornerstone Juniors.
In the opener, PWG (Palmer-Wolbach-Greeley) exploded for four runs in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and score a 7-3 victory.
That outburst came after the hosts had staged a seventh-inning rally of their own to push the game to extra innings. Trailing 3-1, Koch led off the bottom of the inning with a single and Cole Luettel followed with a double. Parker Struebing’s ground-out scored one run and Olson singled to knot the score. Koziol followed with a single and the runners advanced to second and third before being stranded by a strikeout and groundout.
PWG then jumped on Albion reliever Brett Temme in the eighth.
The teams battled fiercely again in the nightcap, Cornerstone again grabbing the early edge with three runs in the third. Rasmussen led off the frame with a walk, Koziol smacked a one-out single and Luettel drove in two with a base hit. Hedlund reached by error to plate Luettel.
Albion did not have another baserunner until the seventh, however, and PWG grabbed the lead with a mid-game outburst.
