Season Stats Give Evidence Of Strong Legion Finish

Albion’s Cornerstone Legion Baseball Juniors squad did not get the 2011 summer season off to a blazing start.
Cornerstone opened 1-3 and stood just 4-6 after losing a pair of contests to PWG.
However, as in many endeavors, it’s all about how you finish, and the Albion Juniors concluded their campaign with a flourish.
Area baseball fans took note as Cornerstone won five games, including four straight in the playback bracket, to capture the the American Legion Juniors Area 5 championship and become the first Albion team in 11 years to qualify for state tournament play.
A look at season statistics reflects on how Cornerstone was able to mount its closing surge to an overall 20-13 record.
One of the strengths of the 2011 squad was a deep stable of pitchers. Six hurlers posted victories for Cornerstone and four finished with earned run averages below 4.00.
Albion also rpgressed at the plate during the season and finished with a .343 team batting average, scoring 262 runs in 33 games (nearly 8 per contest). Holding its opposition to 170 runs (just over 5 per game), Cornerstone finished plus-92 – a definite recipe for successful results.
Along with the batting average, Albion batters accumulated more walks than strikeouts in 2011 (164-154), were hit by pitches 41 times and amassed 237 stolen bases to further enhance offensive productivity. Cornerstone pitchers were generally proficient, walking 84 batters and plunking 11 while striking out 177.
