Although the Boone Central volleyball team has not been able to break into the win column in 2011, first-year Coach Susan Roberts said the Cardinals again made improvement in Saturday’s Central City Invitational.
“We got back to playing competitive volleyball,” Roberts commented. “After a dismal performance at Norfolk Catholic Thursday, we needed to refocus and get back on track. I feel like we did that.”
“We went three sets with Central City and Raymond Central and gave ourselves opportunities to win both matches. Our biggest struggle was getting off to slow starts and needing to play from 5-7 points down in numerous sets.
“We need to execute early in matches and get our momentum building right away,” she added. “Overall, we saw the team improve in many areas, especially on defense where we posted our highest number of digs so far this season.
“It’s frustrating that we aren’t getting the end result we want, but we know we are playing better volleyball and being more competitive. We are going to stay the course and keep working – the results will come.”
Host Central City defeated the Cardinals 25-21, 18-25, 25-14 Saturday. Jenna Lehmann led BC with 12 kills on 23-of-30 hitting and Jade Gottier added nine kills.
Boone Central dropped a 12-25, 27-25, 17-25 decision to Raymond Central. Lehmann again led kills with 14, hitting 22-of-23.
Tough Mid-State rival Norfolk Catholic defeated BC 25-13, 25-16. Johnson led digs with 10, Beierman added seven and Lehmann six. Lehmann also had two kills and two blocks.
Earlier in the week, Boone Central traveled to Norfolk for a triangular, losing matches to Madison (15-25, 15-25) and Norfolk Catholic (5-25, 13-25).
