Boone County is officially Nebraska’s wind energy capital as of Oct. 31, 2011.
Gov. Dave Heineman made the announcement during the commissioning ceremony Monday afternoon for Third Planet Windpower’s new wind farm near Petersburg.
He congratulated Petersburg and Boone County for being “the leader in the state’s major move into wind power.”
With the addition of TPW Petersburg, the county has two wind farms with a total capacity of 121.5 megawatts of wind power generation, which surpasses the total wind capacity of any other county in the state.
The total includes 81 megawatts of capacity from the existing Laredo Ridge Wind Farm (54, 1.5 megawatt towers), and 40.5 megawatts from the new TPW Petersburg Wind Farm (27, 1.5 megawatt towers).
