Punkin’ Chunkin’ attracts big crowd

Miss Nebraska Kayla Batt at Punkin’ Chunkin’Despite the gusty wind blowing from the northwest and an occasional dirt cloud, the eighth annual Punkin’ Chunkin’TM event in Petersburg was deemed successful by the Petersburg Community Club committee.

It was difficult to count attendance when almost everyone arrived at the same time and no entry fees were charged, but organizers estimated a crowd of 1,250 and 1,500. A special guest was 2011 Kayla Batt of Alliance (above).

Eight air cannons and one trebuchet competed in the contest.

Due to the wind, long distances were substantially less in total feet.

Repeat winner was “Grampa’s Gun” with a crew made up of Ralph Weeder and his grandsons from the Lindsay/Humphrey area. Team members included: ‘Captain’ Kyle Wegener, Scott Jarecki, Tyler Cherry, Thomas Greisen of Lincoln, Easton Bomgart, Nick Jarecki and Matthew Wegener.
