Boone Central Wrestlers Show Major Improvement

It’s always nice to start a season off on the right foot.
The Boone Central wrestling team did just that Saturday, taking major strides beyond their performance a year ago in the O’Neill Invitational.
The Cardinals were one of four teams to top 100 points, finishing a solid fourth in a competitive field. Valentine swept to the team title with 218.5 points, followed by the host Eagles (159), West Holt (136) and Boone Central (107).
The Cards did not have an individual champion in the meet, but  brought home seven medals, including three runner-up awards.
“We showed big improvement over this same tournament last year, moving up from a 9th place finish to a respectable 4th and scoring more than two-and-a-half times as many points,” praised Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge. “We also went from three medalists to seven.
“To the man, our young Cardinals showed great attitudes, were aggressive, displayed great efforts and showed a lot of promise.”
The tournament featured a format change from previous seasons, as varsity and JV wrestlers all competed in the same brackets. Team points were scored only by varsity wrestlers, however.
Jackson Meyer, Skyler Weber and Jake Meyer all reached the championship round and placed second in their weight classes. Scott Joe and Bobby Stopak earned 3rd place medals, with Mitch Patzel and Sammy Stopak each placing 4th.
Boone Central earned additional team points with Sean Soll and Jacob Ritterbush each winning a pair of matches and Cody Shanno, Michael Lipker and Tyler Maricle scoring one win apiece.
