Off and running.
The Boone Central girls basketball team hit the floor in high gear Friday night, racing past Hartington Cedar Catholic 65-37 in the 2011-12 season opener in Albion.
Sophomore Jade Gottier poured in 11 first-quarter points to spark a 21-6 Lady Cardinal blitz and the hosts were never really threatened thereafter.
“We really played with good intensity throughout this game,” praised Boone Central Coach Mike Kennedy. “We were very efficient on offense and scored in transition, off of defensive pressure, with dribble penetration and through post-entry passes.
“The area we must improve on is the number of fouls we committed in the first half. We must get that under control.”
Boone Central used suffocating, physical full-court defensive pressure during its first quarter ambush and kept that pressure on during most of the initial three periods.
Post players Jenna Lehmann (6) and Maria Glidden (4) kept the offense humming in the second quarter as BC took a 40-23 lead into halftime. A 19-4 run in the third period, with Emily Carder hitting a three-point basket and scoring six points and Gottier adding another five, built the advantage to 59-27.
