Lady Cardinals Win Holiday Title, Remain Unbeaten

lehmann.jpgThe Boone Central Lady Cardinals have stamped themselves as definite Class C1 state contenders through the first third of the 2011-12 basketball season. A dominant championship performance in the Ord Holiday Tournament Dec. 29-30 did nothing but enhance that perception.
Boone Central ran past Gothenburg 75-28 in the tournament opener, then thumped host Ord 59-35 in the title game to improve its season record to 9-0.
The Lady Cards showed little rust following the mandated NSAA layoff, completely dominating Gothenburg Thursday.
BC’s stifling fullcourt pressure gave the Swedes all types of problems and set up numerous easy scoring opportunities. The Cards raced to a 23-0 lead to open the game and scored 29 first-quarter points as seniors Jaime Kennedy (7) and Jenna Lehmann (6) combined for 13.
“This was a dominant performance by our team. We scored the ball extremely well, shooting 65 percent from two-point range, 33 percent on three-point attempts and 78 percent at the free throw line,” Coach Mike Kennedy commented. “We played defense with great intensity and enthusiasm. We were very unselfish with the ball and totaled 26 assists.
“It showed the confidence we have been building through the early part of the season.”

Although Boone Central did not have one of its better shooting performances in the championship contest, it was strong enough in other facets of the game to easily defeat the Ord Chanticleers.
Leading 10-6 after one period, the Cards broke away from the hosts with a 19-9 run in the second quarter as Gottier hit a pair of three-point field goals and Lehmann dominated the paint with nine points. Ord hung around through the third, but BC finished with an 18-7 blitz for the final 24-point margin.
“We really gritted out a win against a pretty good Ord team by bearing down defensively and doing a decent job on the boards,” Kennedy noted. “We struggled to make shots that have been going in for us, but continued to force a quick tempo and put together some good runs.”
