That is the key word associated with the Boone Central boys track & field team entering the 2012 spring campaign.
The Cardinals have the first part of a successful equation – strong numbers competing. Coach Kris Pestel says the task ahead is developing the talents of those athletes.
“We have a good number of athletes out for the boys team, but return only two state qualifiers, so the development of all our athletes will be the key to our season,” Pestel noted. “We are looking forward to a very competitive season with the depth we have in many areas.
“As with the girls, the Mid-State Conference is a great boys athletic conference and our district will have some of the best teams in Class B,” she added. “We will have to perform at our best to be in the running with those great teams.”
Pestel will look to returning state qualifiers Cole Luettel (senior) and Blake Slizoski (junior) to lead the way this season.
Slizoski competed in the 100 and 200 meter dashes in Omaha for the second straight year in 2011 after placing third in both events in the B4 District. Luettel was also third in the B4 high jump and placed eighth at state.
Boone Central has 36 athletes competing this spring, bolstered by 13 returning letterwinners.
