Cleveland, Relays Victorious In CNTC

relay.jpgOnly the best athletes are invited each year to the prestigious Central Nebraska Track Championships in Grand Island – an event often called a “mini state meet preview”.
Monday, Boone Central athletes proved they certainly belonged in this elite company of competitors. And then some.

Led by senior Kattie Cleveland – a double-gold medalist in the shot put and discus – the Cardinals won four CNTC events, brought home eight medals (1st, 2nd or 3rd) and recorded 16 top-eight performances overall.
Quite an impressive display!
“The seventeen athletes who were invited to participate in the Central Nebraska Track Championships represented our school, communities and families with grit and determination,” praised Boone Central Coach Kris Pestel.

Cleveland emphatically stamped herself as a state meet contender by sweeping gold in Monday’s weight events. She topped the shot put competition with a throw of 38’8 (¾” off her season-best performance at GINW the previous week) and tossed 123’5 to score the discus victory.
Teammate Maria Glidden recorded a season-best 38’1 in the shot, placing third, and was fifth in the discus with a mark of 105’6.
Card Relays Strike Gold
Two of the more impressive performances of the day were turned in by Boone Central relay teams.
The quartet of senior Brody Kelley, junior Calvin Koziol, freshman Matt Brugger and senior Tony Krohn turned the tables on GICC, who had defeated them at GINW last week, outlegging the Crusaders and Shelton to win the 4×800 meter event in a season-best time of 8:23.71.
The Lady Cardinals were not to be outdone. Freshmen Olivia Slizoski and Dana Pelster and seniors Breann Thorberg and Jaime Kennedy raced to a victory of their own in the 4×100 meter relay, also in a season-best time of 50.72.
Along with those victories, Boone Central added several medal efforts and additional season-best performances.
