The Albion Cornerstone Legion Baseball Juniors took advantage of a three-game home stand and continued an excellent start to the 2012 season this past week, winning two of three games to boost their overall record to 4-1.
After dropping its first decision of the summer to Twin Plains Tuesday, Cornerstone bounced back to thump SOS Wednesday, then nipped PWGS in a sweltering Sunday afternoon contest at the Albion Sports Complex Legion Field.
The Albion Juniors were scheduled to play at Norfolk Tuesday and travel to O’Neill Thursday before hosting Pender and Aurora for a Sunday doubleheader (3 & 5 p.m.).
T. Plains 7, Cornerstone 2
Visiting Twin Plains broke open a tight pitchers’ duel with a sixth-inning outburst Tuesday and handed the Albion Cornerstone Juniors their first loss of the young season, 7-2. With the top of its order, Twin Plains opened the sixth with three consecutive singles. Before the frame concluded, TP added two more base hits and had a batter hit by pitch, plating six runs against Hedlund and reliever Derek Gentrup.
Cornerstone 10, SOS 0
Sometimes following a loss, its good to get right back on the playing field. It worked for Cornerstone Legion Baseball Wednesday.
The Albion Juniors bounced back from their Tuesday loss to soundly defeat SOS (Shelby-Osceola-Stromsburg) 10-0 in five innings at the Albion Sports Complex.
Cornerstone scored all the runs pitcher Calvin Koziol would need in the bottom of the first inning. Pierce Koch rapped a one-out single and Hedlund followed with an RBI base hit. Subsequent singles by Travis Kennedy and Brent Janzen, sandwiched around a walk to Wyatt Mazour, and an SOS error gave Cornerstone a 3-0 lead.
Cornerstone 4, PWGS 3
The Albion Cornerstone Juniors tallied runs in the sixth and seventh innings to score a dramatic 4-3 victory over visiting PWGS (Palmer-Wolbach-Greeley-Spalding) on a hot, sunny afternoon at the Sports Complex Legion Field June 3. Following up a strong performance Wednesday, Calvin Koziol came through in the clutch for Cornerstone in the final frame.
Alex Pelster opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and Brent Janzen’s sacrifice bunt moved him to second base. Koziol then laced a double to drive in the winning run.
