Two more victories – and a no-hitter to boot!
It was another successful week for the Albion Cornerstone Legion Baseball Juniors, who won two of three games to improve their overall 2012 record to 6-2.
The week was highlighted by Calvin Koziol’s no-hit gem at O’Neill June 7 and wrapped up with a tough loss to Aurora Sunday ta the Albion Sports Complex Legion Field.
Cornerstone 12, Norfolk 1
The Albion Cornerstone Juniors handily defeated Norfolk 12-1 in the first of back-to-back road contests Tuesday, June 5.
Albion used impressive mound work by Pierce Koch while having plenty of offensive success against a pair of Norfolk pitchers.
Koch did not allow a baserunner until the fourth, when Norfolk scored its only run on a pair of walks and a single. The hosts got two more base hits in the fifth, but stranded both runners, and Koch finished the victory in style by fanning the side in the final inning.
Cornerstone 10, O’Neill 0
When Koziol and Koch scored runs in the top of the first inning at O’Neill June 7, the Cornerstone Juniors didn’t know it would be enough for their sixth victory. More than enough.
Koziol made sure of that, blanking the hosts with six innings of no-hit pitching.
Koziol hit Marcus McNichol with a pitch leading off the bottom of the first and the following batter, Kyle Pardon, reached on a fielder’s choice. Pardon was left on base, however, and O’Neill had just one further baserunner – Dion Nomec – on a base on balls in the third.
Following the walk to Nomec, Koziol set down the final 10 O’Neill batters, finishing the contest with five strikeouts.
Aurora 6, Cornerstone 1
Albion Cornerstone returned home for Sunday’s action, but dropped a competitive 6-1 decision to Aurora at the sports complex.
The visitors broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth inning and stranded eight Cornerstone baserunners in the contest.
