After a slow start to the 2012 summer season, the Albion Cornerstone Legion Baseball Seniors were in need of a victory.
Last week they got two!
The Albion Senior program, unable to field a team in recent years due to lack of numbers, opened its return campaign 0-6 before breaking through with victories over Neligh and Ord at the Albion Sports Complex Legion Field June 13-14.
Cornerstone 8, Neligh 4
Albion Cornerstone took an early lead Wednesday, June 13, then held off rally attempts by the visiting Neligh Seniors for an 8-4, five-inning victory.
Albion actually scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first inning. Parker Struebing and Logan Olson led off with consecutive walks and Struebing scored on Chris Bode’s single. Cole Luettel was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Colton Mazour’s base hit scored Olson. Jacob Meyer drew a walk to push home Bode and back-to-back two-out walks to Tyler Bettencourt and Struebing made it 5-0.
Neligh scored twice in the top of the second and Cornerstone came right back with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Bode belted a lead-off double and Luettel followed with a walk. Meyer scored one run with a sacrifice and Luettel came home on a passed ball.
Cornerstone 13, Ord 8
With another strong start Thursday, the Cornerstone Seniors added a second home win by topping Ord 13-8 in seven innings.
After Struebing was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the first and Olson drew a base on balls, Albion got consecutive base hits by Bode, Luettel, Mazour, Meyer and Pierce Koch. Bode’s RBI double tied the game at 1-1 and Luettel put Cornerstone ahead with a run-scoring single. Meyer’s base hit drove in a run and Koch plated two with a single. A ground out by Bettencourt pushed in another and Struebing’s two-out single gave Cornerstone a 7-1 lead.
Albion opened an 11-3 advantage with single runs in the third (Struebing) and fourth (Koch), and a pair in the fifth with RBI by Bode and Mazour.
