Boone Central senior Amy Ahlers got her 2012 high school tournament season off to a flying start Thursday, August 30, by winning the individual gold medal in the West Holt Invitational.
The Lady Cardinals, three-time defending Class C state champions, couldn’t keep up with Valentine (417) in the team race, but edged host West Holt for runners-up honors, 433-435.
All in all, a pretty impressive feat for a squad that, with junior Faith Leetch out of action due to injury, has just two players back from last year’s title squad.
Ahlers was dominant in her first tourney of the season, firing a 39 on the final nine holes to finish with a round of 81. Valentine’s Michelle Renning placed second with an 89 – the only other player in the field to break triple digits.
Ahlers got terrific support from sophomore Melissa Kyncl, a member of the BC 2011 championship team as a freshman. Kyncl shot an even 100 (48/52) to claim third place Thursday, two strokes in front of Battle Creek’s Bridgett Henn.
Cardinal freshman Kyley Sorell carded a 123 (60/63), which was 25th among the 51 tournament golfers. Junior Jessica Tisthammer completed Boone Central’s team score with an 18-hole total of 129 (67/62), 36th among individuals. BC freshman Lily Johnson shot 145 (75/70).
