Friday’s Boone Central Invitational cross country meet at the Albion Country Club was held in the type of hot weather that forces competitors to dig deep into their well of fortitude.
Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Tom Dickey felt his runners did just that and was pleased by the Cardinals’ season-opening efforts.
“It was a brutally hot day, but our kids did a fantastic job of fighting through the heat and competing well,” Dickey praised.
Senior Calvin Koziol led the BC/NG boys to a sixth-place team finish by placing third individually, while freshman Sheldon Beierman scored a top ten finish (9th) for a Lady Cardinal squad that placed fourth.
“The main goal for the day was to run an evenly-paced race, with a strong second half,” Dickey commented. “I think, for the most part, we accomplished that.
“I was extremely proud of our lead runners. Calvin posted his highest finish in this meet with a perfectly-run race. Sheldon used the same tactic and a great finish, while Catharine Weeder and Hannah Schmitz worked really well together throughout.
“I was very pleased with the kids,” he added. “We had a lot of ‘first-timers’ so it took some great leadership to encourage each other and great desire to make sure we placed high.
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season because I believe we can only get better!”
