The Boone Central girls golf team continued to follow its blueprint for success in two more meets this past week.
Gold medals for senior Amy Ahlers. Strong runner-up performances by sophomore Melissa Kyncl. Team titles for the Cardinals.
Boone Central added to a four-meet victory streak by winning a triangular competition against Scotus and Lakeview at Columbus’ Quail Run Golf Course Tuesday, then followed up Saturday by securing the championship in the Boone Central Invitational at the Albion Country Club.
The Lady Cardinals nipped Scotus by two strokes (199-201) in the nine-hole competition at Quail Run, with Lakeview (239) trailing.
Ahlers continued her superb senior campaign with a 36 and Kyncl had the second-lowest score of the day (43). That pair was supported by freshman Kyley Sorell (54) and junior Jessica Tisthammer (66).
Amy Price of Scotus and Lakeview’s Kelsey Bignell each carded a 45 and Emily Allen of Scotus added a 48. Although Scotus had an eight-stroke advantage between #3 and #4 golfers, the Shamrocks could not quite make up the Boone Central advantage built by Ahlers and Kyncl.
Scotus also presented the biggest challenge in the Boone Central Invite, but using their home course familiarity, the host Cardinals handily thwarted the Shamrocks (378-396). O’Neill (411) took third place.
Ahlers and Kyncl were again superb, finishing 1-2 individually, and BC also got a very strong performance by Sorell, who finished 14th to give the Cards a third medalist and a comfortable margin in the team competition.
Ahlers fired rounds of 36-39 to finish at 75, eight strokes in front of teammate Kyncl, who shot a consistent 41-42 for 83.
That pair of Cardinals pretty much flew away from the remainder of the field, with no other golfer finishing lower than 95.
Sorell had the best tournament of her debut high school season to date, joining medalists with rounds of 51-54 and a 105 total. Tisthammer completed the BC team score with a solid 115 on rounds of 59-56.
