The Boone Central/Newman Grove varsity volleyball team continued to hover just below .500 (8-9) after splitting contests in a triangular at Wayne October 2.
Boone Central/Newman Grove opened the night with a 2-1 victory over host Wayne, then dropped a competitive 2-1 decision to Pierce after winning the opening set.
“The varsity is playing aggressive, competitive volleyball,” noted Cardinal Coach Susan Roberts. “We are still working on being consistent in our communication and execution at critical times in games.
“Overall, I’m pleased with our progress and looking to finish the regular season strong, with only three matches left before the Mid-State Conference tournament.”
Jade Gottier led Boone Central/Newman Grove’s 25-23, 23-25, 25-19 victory over the Wayne Blue Devils. The junior hitter smacked 15 kills, made 15 digs and went 9-of-10 at the service line with an ace.
The Lady Cardinals came up just short in a 25-20, 22-25, 22-25 loss to Pierce in the nightcap.
Pokorny paced the Cards at the net with eight kills and two blocks and added 10 digs. Strong and Beierman each had four kills and Gottier three, while Stuhr dished out 21 assists. Rachel Lee and Gottier made seven digs each.
