Taking care of business.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals stayed on track for a potential C1-5 District championship this past Friday by dispatching feisty 1-5 Madison 34-8 at the Boone Central athletic field in Albion.
The victory improved BC/NG’s 2012 record to 5-1, retained a #3 ranking in the Omaha World-Herald Class C1 Top 10 and positioned the Cardinals to claim a district title if they defeat C1 #4 Lakeview (5-1) at Columbus this Friday.
Although the verdict was never in doubt last week, Madison gave Boone Central/Newman Grove enough of a test to keep the Cards sharp.
On a chilly Senior/Parents Night in Albion, BC/NG took a 14-0 lead after one quarter of play, built the advantage to 27-0 by halftime, and went ahead 34-0 before the visiting Dragons scored a late touchdown against Cardinal substitutes.
All in all, an acceptable night.
“Madison was a team that was a little tough to play because they took so many chances on defense,” noted Cardinal Coach Arnie Johnson. “That caused us to have some negative plays, but also allowed us to make a number of big plays offensively, which helped us take a comfortable lead early.
“Our defense did a good job getting our offense some great scoring opportunities by getting us the ball back with forced turnovers.
“Probably one of the nicest things about this game was that we were able to give our underclassmen some chances to show what they could do at the varsity level.”
