The Boone Central/Newman Grove cross country teams used their home course advantage to good measure Thursday, qualifying for the 2012 state championships with impressive efforts at the Albion Country Club.
The Cardinal boys, led by senior gold medalist Calvin Koziol, won the C-3 District title and the BC/NG girls earned a trip to Kearney with a gutty third-place finish.
Along with Koziol’s victory – his first ever on the ACC course – freshman Hannah Schmitz blitzed the school record held previously by Ashlynn Bader and Cassidy Pribnow.
“I was extremely proud of our kids!” praised Cardinal Coach Tom Dickey. “Both races were filled with potential state-qualifying teams, but they still came out and did what they had to under that pressure.”
Boone Central/Newman Grove scored 49 points to best Scotus (55) and Arlington (56) in the boys division. The Lady Cards finished with 53 points, behind only Scotus (32) and West Point-Beemer (49).
“We knew the boys could win. We’d been beaten soundly by two other district teams, but the way the guys had been running the past two weeks, I knew it was possible,” Dickey commented.
“The girls had a huge burden on their shoulders. They had beaten other quality teams in this district handily earlier, but due to injuries just weren’t the same team,” Dickey noted. “They had to scrape and claw to make sure they qualified!”
