Lady Cards ousted from sub-district

Jade Gottier with a killThe Pierce Bluejays ended Boone Central/Newman Grove’s 2012 volleyball season Monday night with a four-set victory in the opening round of the C1-8 Sub-District tournament at Norfolk High School.
Boone Central/Newman Grove struggled returning serve and passing in the contest, never able to get its offense untracked. After dropping the first two sets by identical 25-15 scores, the Cardinals bounced back to win the third set 25-20. Pierce thwarted the comeback in set four, securing the decision, 25-16.
Monday’s contest was a rematch of the Mid-State Conference Tournament fifth-place game between the two teams the previous Friday that went five sets before Pierce prevailed.
Pokorny led Boone Central/Newman Grove attackers with 11 kills against a tall Pierce line-up that posed a formidable block. Jade Gottier added eight kills, Marissa Beierman seven and Emily Strong five.
Kaitlyn Stuhr had another solid match directing the Cardinal attack with 28 set assists and served two aces, as did freshman Celine Dunlap.
Pokorny finished her single Cardinal volleyball season with a strong all-around performance, also leading BC/NG with 16 digs Monday. Gottier made 15 digs in the contest, while Lee and Dunlap each added 10.
