Powerhouses Valentine and O’Neill – ranked 2nd and 4th in Class C, respectively – dominated the O’Neill Invitational Dec. 1, with Valentine taking the meet championship by a margin of 246.5-181.5.
Boone Central/Newman Grove, playing catch-up after finishing the fall football season Nov. 20 in the C1 state championship game, placed sixth at O’Neill with 77.5 points.
The Cardinals were led by third-place wrestlers Mark O’Brien, Jackson Meyer and Dakota Ruhnke. Scott Joe, Cody Shanno and Jacob Olson placed fourth.
“With the football players having only 4-5 practices before this meet, technique and wrestling condition has a ways to go,” acknowledged BC/NG Coach Dale Bonge. “We did not get the results we wanted, but to the man, our guys competed tough.
“The ‘Wrestler of the Meet’ award goes to Mark O’Brien for his relentless attacking style in getting four straight wins, including three pins, after a first-round loss.”
Other efforts Bonge noted were Meyer posting a hard-fought 10-7 win over teammate Joe in the consolation final and Ruhnke, who dominated his matches other than a respectable 0-6 loss to two-time state champion Marcus Nelson of Valentine.
