There was frustration, and also some satisfaction, for the Boone Central/Newman Grove girls basketball team on the opening weekend of the 2012-13 season.
BC/NG dropped a tough 62-52 overtime decision to Mid-State Conference foe Hartington Cedar Catholic Friday night, then bounced back to defeat Lakeview 69-46 Saturday in Albion.
The Lady Cardinals are continuing a hectic schedule pace this week. Boone Central/Newman Grove hosted Crofton Tuesday, will travel to Central City Thursday, then face conference rival Pierce Friday in Albion.
Hartington C.C. 62, B. Central/N. Grove 52
In a back-and-forth, seesaw battle on opening night, the host Hartington C.C. Lady Trojans pulled out an overtime victory over Boone Central/Newman Grove.
The Lady Cards had the upper hand in the early going, taking an 11-5 lead in the first quarter before Cedar Catholic stormed back to take an 18-17 lead into intermission. BC/NG again forged ahead in the third period and led 30-26, but the hosts rallied at the end of a wild, high-scoring final stanza to tie, then outscored the Cardinals 14-4 in the extra session.
BC/NG 69, Lakeview 46
Boone Central/Newman Grove turned to physical, suffocating fullcourt defensive pressure Saturday afternoon to fuel its offense and overall game in a 69-46 victory over Lakeview.
The Lady Cards raced to a 15-5 lead in the opening period and used a 20-10 third-quarter run to open a 54-32 advantage.
