Livestock cruelty case filed

After six months of intermittent discussions by the county commissioners and complaints by neighbors, Boone County Attorney John Morgan has filed felony charges of abandonment and cruel neglect of animals against James P. Majerus of rural Petersburg.
On Dec. 6, Majerus was charged with three counts of felony animal abandonment and cruelty, and Glen F. Jochem of Albion was also charged with one count of felony animal abandonment and cruelty to animals he has kept on the Majerus land.
The filing alleges that the offenses were documented on July 6, 10 and 20, 2012.
A civil court hearing has also been scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20, at 9:30 a.m. on an allegation that Majerus violated Nebraska statutes requiring “lawful fences.”
Numerous complaints have been documented about horses and other livestock running loose on roadways west of Petersburg, allegedly from the Majerus land.
Details in the Dec. 12 Albion News and Petersburg Press Print & Electronic Editions.
