The Boone Central/Newman Grove Lady Cardinals won two of three games, evening their season record at 4-4, in the final week of action before the annual holiday break.
After defeating Twin River handily at Newman Grove Dec. 11 (57-41), Boone Central/Newman Grove carved out a tough 50-47 victory at West Holt Saturday before falling to undefeated Minden Monday on the road.
Despite many peaks and valleys during the early portion of the campaign, the young Lady Cards have shown improvement and encouraging signs for the remainder of the season.
Boone Central/Newman Grove will next be in action Dec. 27 in the opening round of the 2012 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout holiday tournament at Wayne State College.
BC/NG 57, T. River 41
Although leading most of the contest, it took a big finish for Boone Central/Newman Grove to pull away from Twin River in a 57-41 victory Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The Lady Cards broke a 21-21 halftime stalemate as Shannon Stuhlmiller sparked a 16-11 third-quarter run with two three-point baskets and eight points. Darienne Pokorny, who also scored eight points in the third, drained a pair of treys and scored nine overall in a 20-9 fourth-period blitz.

You always need to be ready to weather a little “inequity” in road games.
Despite host West Holt shooting 26 free throws to Boone Central/Newman Grove’s 12 Saturday at Atkinson, the Lady Cards rode the hot hands of Pokorny and Gottier and strong work on the boards to a 50-47 victory.
“Our kids showed a great deal of resiliency. We worked very hard on the defensive boards and gave up only seven offensive rebounds,” Kennedy noted. “We survived 26 free throw attempts by West Holt.
Minden 68, BC/NG 39
Boone Central/Newman Grove had another tough road test at Minden Monday, facing the team that defeated the Cardinals in the state tournament semi-finals one year ago, and dropped a 68-39 decision to the Whippets.
