Boone Central/Newman Grove began slowly, but picked up momentum as the day progressed in the annual Boone Central Dual Tournament Saturday in Albion.
The Cardinals finished fourth in the meet with a 2-3 record, defeating Norfolk Catholic and Omaha South. Three teams – Battle Creek, Wood River and Boys Town – posted 4-1 records, with Battle Creek earning first place on criteria total team scoring in all duals.
“We did not start off on a very good note, but improved as the day went along,” acknowledged Card Coach Dale Bonge. “Case in point – we started the day getting smoked by Battle Creek. Later in the day we had a relatively close match with Wood River and a one-point loss to Boys Town. Battle Creek handles Boys Town, Wood River beats Battle Creek, Boys Town beats Wood River.
“So, while we are not pleased with the way we started, it was good to see the improvement and to know that when we wrestle well, we can be a very competitive team.
“Everyone who stepped on the mat for us contributed to the team with their efforts and also got their hand raised at least once.”
