Card wrestlers battle illness, struggle at Madison

Plagued by illness, the Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestling team found tough going in the Madison Invite Friday, placing 8th in the 14-team field.
Host Madison won the event with 237.5 points, challenged only by runner-up Pender (209.5). BC/NG finished the meet with 101 team points.
The Cardinals, who had seven medalists, were led by 4th-place finishers Dakota Ruhnke and Scott Joe.
“After last week’s good showing (in Gibbon Invite), we took a couple of steps in the wrong direction this week,” commented BC/NG Coach Dale Bonge. “No less than four times during the meet we went from nearly pinning our opponent to being pinned. We seemed sluggish.
“We had a couple of guys not participating due to the flu and probably should have had several more sit out.
“On the bright side, we did have seven medalists,” Bonge continued. “Dakota went 3-2 in another very tough bracket.
“Scott went 2-2 with two pins, one of which was a comeback win. He nearly did it again in his consolation final. Behind 11-6, Scott took the guy down to his back to tie, but could not quite get the pin and was reversed in the final seconds of the match.
“For his efforts, Scott receives our ‘Wrestler of the Meet’ award.”
Steven Arreguin, Cody Shanno and Ethan Wilke placed 5th for BC/NG, while Skyler Weber and Jacob Olson each took 6th. Several of the Cardinals were very close to placing considerably higher.
