Mid-State honors Cardinals

Beau BremerDerek GentrupTyler HedlundThe Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals, runners-up in the 2013 Class C-1 Boys State Basketball Tournament, had three players honored as Mid-State Conference 2012-13 All-Conference selections in voting last week by league coaches.
Boone Central senior Beau Bremer and juniors Derek Gentrup and Tyler Hedlund were picked for the 10-player Mid-State All-Conference list. Boone Central junior Pierce Koch and sophomore Wyatt Mazour both received Honorable Mention in the voting.

The five Cardinals led BC/NG to one of the best seasons in program history. Boone Central/Newman Grove finished 23-7 and ranked #2 in Class C-1 behind undefeated champion Wahoo by the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star.

Beau Bremer, son of Todd & Kandi Bremer, had a dominant season as an inside force for Boone Central/Newman Grove. The 6-foot-7 senior averaged 10.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. He established new marks on both the Boone Central and Albion/Boone Central record charts for most blocked shots in a season (99) and career (243). Bremer also ranks fourth on Albion/Boone Central lists in career rebounds (507) and defensive rebounds in a season (134). On Boone Central Top 10 lists (2001-13), he is second in rebounds in a season (210), defensive rebounds in a season (134), offensive rebounds in a season (78); third in free throws in a season (118) and seventh in season points (304).

Derek Gentrup, son of Roger & Nicole Gentrup, was one of two Cardinal juniors selected All-Conference. The 5-10 guard averaged 11.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest and led the team in 3-point shooting percentage (.413). That 3-point accuracy ranks second on the Boone Central record charts. Gentrup also joined the following Boone Central Top 10 lists (2001-13) – sixth in season rebounds (148) and season points (310), eighth in season free throws (101) and defensive rebounds (101), and tenth in season assists (69).

Tyler Hedlund, son of Randy & Tracy Hedlund, led Boone Central/Newman Grove in a number of categories in 2012-13. The 5-11 junior averaged a team-best 14.4 points per game and also led the Cards in assists (3.6), 3-point field goals (44), free throws made (94), steals (64) and defensive touches (63). His assist (110) and point (432) totals this past season are second on the Boone Central Top 10 charts (2001-13) and his 64 steals rank third. On overall Albion/Boone Central lists, Hedlund is fourth in season points, fifth in season assists, sixth in season steals, seventh in season 3-point field goals and career assists (178), and eighth in career steals (107) and career 3-point field goals (80).

Pierce Koch, son of Doug & Angie Koch, received Mid-State Honorable Mention for his play during the 2012-13 season. The 5-10 junior averaged 5.3 points, 2.0 assists and 1.7 rebounds per game and made 34 steals. He was second in 3-point field goals made (32) and shot 74 percent from the foul line.

Wyatt Mazour, son of Dr. John & Kay Mazour, also received Mid-State Honorable Mention as a sophomore. Like Koch, the 5-8 guard was a key factor off the Cardinal bench, especially in the post-season. Mazour averaged 2.6 points per game and had season totals of 30 rebounds, 24 assists and 21 steals. He was 12-of-37 shooting from 3-point range and shot 77 percent at the free throw line.
