With some cooperative weather – finally – the Boone Central/Newman Grove boys golf team teed off its 2013 spring season this past week.
Boone Central/Newman Grove hosted Ord in dual competition at the Albion Country Club Tuesday, April 2, then traveled to the Ord Golf Club for the Ord Invitational Friday.
The visiting Chanticleers defeated Boone Central/Newman Grove 176-190 in the varsity portion of Tuesday’s season-opening dual.
Senior Hunter Henry and freshman Joel Meyer led the Cardinals, each recording rounds of 44 on the Albion Country Club nine-hole layout. Juniors Jackson Meyer (50) and Bryce Paulson (52) rounded out the varsity score, while sophomore Parker Wallin posted a 56.
Ord’s Jaden Barnes shot 41 to lead all players and the Chants had four golfers score in the 40’s.
Ord also won the JV competition, 176-232. Junior Luke Johnson and freshman Blake Olnes each shot 55 to lead BC/NG.
Valentine, led by individual gold medalist Cameron Bancroft, won the Ord Invitational championship Friday, April 5.
The Badgers finished with a 317 team total, 10 strokes in front of the host Chants. The Ord JV finished third at 347.
Bancroft, who fired a 72 on two circuits of the Ord Golf Club course, was joined in the top 10 by teammates Alex Dredge (5th, 80), Brooks Coleman (8th, 82) and Lane Hildebrandt (9th, 83).
Boone Central/Newman Grove opened its 2013 tournament season with a 10th place finish, posting a 419 team score.
Henry led the way for the Cards, shooting rounds of 45-54 to finish at 99 – the only BC/NG golfer under the 100 mark.
Paulson had a consistent 100 with two rounds of 50 and Wallin shot 52-49/101. Olnes completed the team score with a 110 (65-54).
Boone Central/Newman Grove was scheduled to play in a triangular at Fullerton Tuesday, weather permitting. The Cardinals will host the annual Boone Central Invitational Saturday at the Albion Country Club (9 a.m.).
