Albion’s 18 & under softball team swept three home games to wrap up the 2013 regular season.
Albion hosted Neligh Thursday, June 25, and easily scored victories in both ends of a doubleheader.
Albion opened the evening with an 11-3 win in five innings, scoring runs in each of its four at-bats.
The hosts took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Gina Nelson singled home Terri Molt, then scored on a sacrifice by Maria Glidden. Albion increased that advantage to 6-1 in the second. Niki Mewhirter, Kylie Finnegan and Shawna Osborn strung together consecutive one-out singles and, with two outs, Nelson cracked a two-run single. Two more scored when Shannon Stuhlmiller reached by error.
The local 18-unders had no trouble adding a 16-0 victory in the nightcap.
Albion got off to a quick start with 10 runs in the opening frame. Molt got things rolling with a lead-off single and Kelsey Lee, Reicks, Bridget Krings, Brianna Brugman, Molt and Ketteler all drove in runs. Lee had three RBI in the inning with a single and double as Albion sent 15 batters to the plate.
Albion prepared for postseason play with a dominant 19-7 victory over visiting St. Edward June 27.
St. Edward plated five runs in the first inning, but Albion doubled that total. Nelson got the hosts on the scoreboard by singling Molt home. Glidden drove in two and Lee one with back-to-back doubles.
Krings, Brugman and Finnegan tallied in the second to boost the margin to 13-5. St. Edward added a pair in the third before Albion secured the win with a six-run fourth. Lee had a two-run single in the inning, and Mewhirter and Finnegan also drove in runs.
