The Albion Cornerstone Legion Seniors have been involved in their share this summer.
1-3. 1-2. 4-0. 4-1. 0-1. 1-0.
Add 2-1 to the ledger, with Cornerstone a victor in a tense extra-inning dogfight against visiting DCB (Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus) Tuesday, July 2, at Leon Nelson Memorial Field in Albion.
The teams were deadlocked in a 1-1 stalemate after the regulation seven innings as Albion’s Tyler Hedlund and Austin Caspersen of DCB dueled on even terms.
Finally, in the bottom of the ninth, Albion was able to string together a walk and three singles against DCB reliever Dylan Foster, providing the game-winner and improving its season record to 12-6.
Foster, after taking over for Caspersen, was able to stymie Cornerstone in the eighth, but wilted in the bottom of the ninth. Austin Miller opened the inning by reaching on a bunt single and stole second. Miller advanced to third on a wild pitch and Alex Pelster walked and stole second. Miller held at third on Brett Temme’s infield hit, but Cole Luettel followed with the game-winning base hit to right field.
Hedlund got the well-deserved victory, scattering five hits over the full nine innings and striking out four.
