Despite some rough going during the 2013 season, the Boone Central softball team continues to play hard and give top effort, which led to the Cardinals capturing their third victory this past week.
Boone Central defeated Lutheran High NE in its final game of the Mid-State Conference Tournament on a cold, blustery Saturday Oct. 5 after dropping contests to Wayne and Pierce.
“It was a cold day, plain and simple,” acknowledged BC Coach Cassie Olson. “I was pleased with the 1-2 performance.”
The Cardinals opened the event with a 13-1 loss to a strong Wayne squad. The Blue Devils scored nine runs in the third inning to break open a 4-1 game. Boone Central had more success at the plate against Pierce, but the Bluejays scored three times in four straight innings to key a 14-7 triumph.
Boone Central finished the day on a high note, defeating LHNE 12-9 in a topsy-turvy contest. The Cards took a 6-4 lead after one inning and, after the Eagles closed to within 8-7, added three key runs in the fourth for an 11-8 advantage. Finnegan was the winning pitcher, surrenduring seven earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out four and walked three. Finnegan, Baker and Emily Provencher all had two hits for BC. Finnegan and Provencher both scored twice, as did Kaddee Harner and Brianna Brugman.
