Every season in every sport has its ups and downs. A key measurement of a team is how it responds to the bumps in the road.
Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Susan Roberts was pleased with the way her Cardinal volleyball team bounced back from losses to Wayne and Pierce early last week to earn a road victory at West Holt Thursday.
“I felt we played well, especially on defense, against Wayne, but were struggling getting an aggressive attack going. We really struggled on serve receive against Pierce and just made too many errors offensively to get anything going,” Roberts commented. “It was a different story on Thursday.
“We started slowly in set one, but I was really proud of the mental toughness the girls showed in the second set. We focused more on transition and got our attacking going and didn’t look back from there.”
A tough Wayne (17-4) squad swept Boone Central/Newman Grove 25-20, 25-21 to open a triangular in Albion Tuesday. The Pierce Bluejays handed the Cards a second defeat – 26-24, 25-10 – in the late contest.
Jade Gottier had a double-double of 12 kills and 18 digs – along with two aces and a pair of blocks – to lead Thursday’s 12-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 comeback victory at West Holt.
