The Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals had hoped a 3-1 victory at West Point-Beemer October 22 would propel them into the annual Mid-State Conference volleyball tournament with momentum.
The 3rd-seeded Wayne Blue Devils had other ideas, however.
Wayne handed #6 seed Boone Central/Newman Grove a 25-16, 25-23, 25-19 loss in first-round action Monday at Pierce High School. Wayne improved to 21-5 with the victory, while the Cardinals saw their season mark drop to 8-16.
Jade Gottier was the only BC/NG hitter to find much success against Wayne, leading Cardinal kills with 11. Megan Nelson, Whitney Wurdeman and Marissa Beierman all had four kills in the match. Kaity Stuhr (15 assists) and Celine Dunlap (11) directed the attack, while Faith Choat (15 digs) and Beierman (10) paced the defensive effort. Gottier served four aces and Tessa Hedlund had a pair.
Boone Central/Newman Grove faced Battle Creek (9-20) in a consolation-bracket contest Tuesday night, the winner advancing to a 5th place match Friday at Battle Creek High School.
