Working the kinks out.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove girls and boys basketball teams hosted West Point-Beemer Monday night for exhibitions in conjunction with the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame Jamboree Games.
The contests do not count on teams’ official season records and are not used for determining NSAA wild card points. Proceeds from Monday’s event go to the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Foundation.
Along with their fundraising purpose, the games allow coaches and players a reference point in their preparation for this week’s official 2013-14 season-openers.
The BC/NG Lady Cardinals began Monday’s action with a 50-43 victory over the visiting Cadets.
The Cardinals earned the win with what coaches like to see – a strong finish. BC/NG outscored West Point-Beemer 12-5 in the final quarter to pull away in a game that was tight throughout.
Elissa Slizoski led balanced BC/NG scoring with 14 points. Miranda Ketteler (13) and Kaity Stuhr (10) were also in double figures. Marissa Beierman grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cards, with Slizoski and Dana Pelster each snaring eight.
After struggling a bit with West Point-Beemer’s zone defense in the first half, the Boone Central/Newman Grove boys used a 22-point third period to spark a 67-54 victory Monday night.
The Cardinals also had a balanced scoring column, led by Derek Gentrup (12), Pierce Koch (11), Tyler Hedlund (11), Travis Kennedy (9) and Carter Johnson (7). Hedlund also dished out six assists and Zac Glidden topped BC/NG rebounders with six.
