For the second straight week a hungry Cardinal wrestling team toted home hardware from a major tournament.
One week after ending a lengthy trophy drought at Gibbon, Boone Central/Newman Grove captured team runner-up honors at the 16-team Madison Invitational Friday, as nine of 11 Card wrestlers earned medals.
The host Dragons rolled up 212.5 points to win the competition. Helped by team bonus points for pins, tech falls and major decisions, BC/NG totaled 156.5 to edge Pender (150) and Logan View (142.5) in a dog fight for second place.
“Solid performances by everyone on the team,” praised Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge. “There were a few matches that got away from us, but as a team we are continuing to show a great deal of improvement.”
Nolan Wondercheck highlighted the meet for BC/NG with his first career weight class championship. Joel Meyer and Scott Joe also reached the finals and placed second, and Jackson Meyer earned a third-place finish. Cody Shanno was fourth and four Cardinals – Steven Arreguin, Sam Stopak, Ethan Wilke and Isaac Sullivan – placed fifth in their respective divisions.
Wondercheck needed just two victories on the mat to secure his title and dominated in both, with a major decision and a pin.
