Three in a row. Five-of-six.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove Lady Cardinals built on their recent strong run with a pair of victories this past week, improving their overall 2013-14 record to 11-5.
Boone Central/Newman Grove rebounded from a slow start Thursday and used a blistering second half to rout the visiting Scotus Shamrocks 58-35.
Despite six points by Jade Gottier and Kaity Stuhr’s 3-pointer, Scotus rolled to a 15-9 first-quarter lead with sharp offensive play. The Cardinals turned the tables in the second period, knotting the score at 24-all behind 3-point field goals by Stuhr, Megan Nelson and Gottier.
The second half was all BC/NG. Nelson hit another trey and six Cardinals scored points during a 14-5 third-quarter blitz. The hosts then ran away in the fourth, again getting points from six players and outscoring Scotus 20-6.
Although not at its sharpest, according to Kennedy, Boone Central/Newman Grove used hustle and defensive grit to score a 55-30 road win at Ord Friday.
“When you play 25 or so games a year, there are going to be some nights you are not as sharp as you want to be offensively,” the Card coach noted. “This game was like that for us. On those nights you are going to have to rely on your defense to get the job done.
“We gave a tremendous defensive effort in this game and were dominant on the boards. I appreciate how hard our team played and how much heart they showed.
“We are quietly putting together a great season and are doing it with a team that continues to improve and believe in each other.”
