On to the post-season.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove girls basketball team ran past Spalding/Spalding Academy and Lutheran High NE last week to conclude the 2013-14 regular season with a 15-8 record. It was the seventh consecutive winning season for the Lady Cardinal program.
BC/NG opened play in the C1-8 Sub-District at Norfolk Tuesday night against Norfolk Catholic. The winner will face the Pierce-Madison winner Thursday at Norfolk High School (8 p.m.) in the sub-district final.
The Lady Cards hosted Class D2 Spalding/Spalding Academy Tuesday, Feb. 11, and after a combative first half, pulled away to a 55-32 victory.
“It was a very hectic game. We faced a defense we did not prepare for and adjusted pretty well,” said Card Coach Mike Kennedy. “We struggled at times defensively in the first half, but the kids played much better in the second half, holding them to 11 points.
“We had many players make a positive contribution in this game and parents’ night is a great time for that.
“Great win for our team!”
Boone Central/Newman Grove gained post-season momentum with its decisive 61-40 triumph over Lutheran High NE Friday.
Gottier got the Cardinals off to a strong start with two 3-pointers and eight first-quarter points. Having built a 29-19 halftime lead, BC/NG rode the hot hand of Megan Nelson in the second half. The senior wing knocked down four 3-pointers – three in the final quarter – and scored 16 points overall as the Cardinals outscored LHNE 32-21.
“We ended our regular season with our 15th win, the eighth at home in nine tries. These are great accomplishments that our team is proud of,” Kennedy praised. “We played with great intensity and urgency defensively and moved the ball well on offense – very unselfish basketball. It was a great win.
“I want to congratulate Jade Gottier on surpassing the 1,000 point mark for her career. It is a special achievement and I am proud of her.”
