Although Boone Central/Newman Grove proved last season you can lose your regular-season finale and still make a postseason run, coaches would always prefer to ride a crest of momentum into sub-district play.
The Cardinals accomplished the latter Friday, traveling to Crofton and avenging last year’s loss to the Warriors with a solid 65-50 triumph.
That certainly helps keep momentum rolling in the Cards’ favor. BC/NG finishes the 2013-14 regular season with an 18-5 record, nine straight victories, its first Mid-State Conference Tournament championship in nine years and the #1 ranking in the Omaha World-Herald’s Class C1 Top 10.
Now the Cardinals seek a return trip to the Nebraska State Tournament and, ultimately, a second straight appearance in the C1 championship game.
BC/NG began that quest Tuesday against O’Neill in the first round of the C1-8 Sub-District at Norfolk High School. The winner faces Pierce or Norfolk Catholic Thursday at 7 p.m. in the sub-district final.
Boone Central/Newman Grove came out Friday like a jet on takeoff and, while the final flight was a bit bumpy, the Cardinals reached their victory destination with relative ease.
“Crofton is not a very deep team, but they had been playing well as of late,” said BC/NG Coach Dan Zoucha of the 12-9 Warriors. “They do have several post players who are very active and they possess the ability to shoot well from beyond the arc, as well as drive to the hoop.
“We got off to a very good start. We were able to force Crofton into 17 turnovers and converted many of those into points.
“All in all, we played pretty well and, obviously, it’s a good way to end the regular season,” Zoucha stated. “There are no freebies now in our sub-district. We have to be ready to play. Every game will be difficult.”
