Time to go to work.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals are ready for a second straight trip to the Nebraska Boys State Basketball Tournament and another shot at winning a Class C1 championship.
The Cardinals, C1 runners-up to Wahoo in 2013, will take a 19-6 record into the 2014 state tournament as one of two C1 wild card qualifiers.
Boone Central/Newman Grove (19-6) will open tourney play Thursday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center as the #5 seed, facing #3 seed Wahoo Bishop Neumann (19-6) at 3:45 p.m.
The BC/NG-Neumann winner will face the winner of Thursday’s other afternoon game between #1 seed Columbus Scotus (21-4) and #8 Kearney Catholic (15-11) in a semifinal contest Friday (10:45 a.m.) at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Class C1 championship game is set for Pinnacle at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. The third-place contest will be held at Lincoln Southeast High School (12 noon).
Despite a loss to Norfolk Catholic in the C1-8 Sub-District final, it’s been another banner season for Boone Central/Newman Grove. The Cardinals were the preseason #1 team in Class C1 in the Omaha World-Herald, ascended to that position again prior to postseason play, and will take the #6 ranking in the OWH C1 Top 10 into the state tournament.
