The Boone Central/Newman Grove boys golf team tied for sixth place in the Wayne Golf Invitational May 8 at the Wayne Country Club.
The Wayne event was one of the largest tournaments of the season, featuring a competitive field of 19 teams that was topped by Blair (305). O’Neill of the Mid-State Conference was runner-up at 333. Boone Central/Newman Grove and Laurel-Concord each carded 357 team scores.
Cardinal senior Tyler Hedlund had a strong day on the 18-hole layout and was Boone Central/Newman Grove’s only medalist (16th place) with a 42/41-83. Seniors Jackson Meyer (44/46-90, 31st) and Derek Gentrup (45/46-91, 37th) also finished among the top 40 golfers. Sophomore Joel Meyer rounded out the Cardinal team score with a 46/47-93. Parker Wallin carded a 47/48-95.
Blair’s dominance showed in the medal count, as Bear golfers claimed three of the top four positions. Vance Janssen of Blair was tournament medalist (35/37-72) and teammates Blake Dunkle (35/41-76) and Ryan Clark (39/39-78) took third and fourth, respectively. Individual runner-up was Preston Peters of Bancroft-Rosalie (35/39-74) and O’Neill’s Josh Cuddy placed fifth (41/37-78).
