The scoreboard at Omaha Burke Stadium told the story.
Boone Central/Newman Grove’s girls 4×800 meter relay team had not won a gold medal. But when official times flashed on the scoreboard, the Lady Cardinals were jumping with joy (photo at right) at breaking through the 10-minute barrier and setting a new Boone Central school record in the event (9:59.26).
Their sixth-place medals would also be the highest placing effort for Cardinal athletes in the 2014 Nebraska State Track and Field Championships.
Weeder and Gottier later joined Dana Pelster and Sheldon Beierman to place fourth in Section 1 of the 4×400 meter relay and seventh overall in the event with an Albion News 2013 Area Best clocking of 4:08.03.
Beierman secured Boone Central/Newman Grove’s other medal Saturday. After finished second in in Heat 3 of the Class B 100 meter high hurdles behind Aurora’s Taylor Thiele Friday in 15.52, she took seventh place in the event final with a time of 15.50. Julianne Burr of Holdrege established a new Class B meet record in the 100 highs (14.81).
Boone Central/Newman Grove had three athletes competing in field events at the 2014 state meet. Unfortunately, none were able to match their season bests, which would have placed them among the medalists.
Austin Zoucha finished 15th in the Class B boys shot put with a top throw of 47’7. Celine Dunlap vaulted 8’6, tieing for 12th, and Catherine Weeder finished in a tie for 15th in the high jump by clearing 4’10.
On the track Friday, Beierman qualified for the 100 high hurdle final, then ran third in Heat 2 of the 300 meter low hurdles in a time of 47.32, missing the event final. Olivia Slizoski also competed in the hurdle events, finishing fourth in Heat 2 of the 100 highs (16.51) and sixth in Heat 3 of the 300 lows (48.61).
Scott Ketteler finished seventh in Heat 2 of the boys 110 meter high hurdles (16.43), Evan Struebing was sixth in Heat 1 of the 300 meter intermediate hurdles (42.92) and Travis Kennedy ran seventh in Heat 3 of the 100 meter dash (11.47).
Jade Gottier took seventh in Section 1 of Saturday’s 800 meter finals in a time of 2:28.21, less than two/tenths of a second off her Boone Central record time set in the district meet, and placed 20th overall.
Ashlynn Baker finished 18th in the 1600 meter run (5:43.76) and teammate Kendra Gonzalez was 23rd (5:49.54). Beierman secured her individual medal in the 100 highs, the girls 4×400 meter relay placed seventh and the Cardinal boys relay of Damian Backus, Joe Brugger, Kennedy and Zac Glidden closed the 2014 track and field season with an eight-place finish in Section 2 of the 4×400 in a time of 3:35.80.
