BC/NG harriers impress coach in opening meet

Although they will hope to improve their team finishes in future meets, Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Tom Dickey was very pleased with the performances of his cross country runners in Friday’s Boone Central Invitational at the Albion Country Club.

“I felt like we really had an outstanding race on Friday. Obviously, the weather was a major factor, but we still competed very well,” Dickey praised. “Our goals for the first meet were really simple, but the kids upped the ante right off the bat.
“Most of our runners had major personal bests – something that rarely happens the first race of the season!”

The Boone Central/Newman Grove girls, paced by senior Catherine Weeder’s 12th-place finish and school record time of 20:42, finished fifth in a race dominated by champion York. Nebraska Christian edged Scotus and York in the boys’ race, where BC/NG placed eighth.
Christina Stopak (15th) and Taylor Starman (18th) joined Weeder in the girls’ top twenty and the Lady Cards had four more runners among the top forty in the 100-plus runner field (Kendra Gonzalez- 23rd, Sheldon Beierman- 24th, Bailey Reigle- 27th, Jessica Weeder- 34th).
Senior Andrew Rasmussen led the BC/NG boys, placing 16th in a personal best clocking of 17:30. Senior Cody Shanno was 39th and sophomore Thomas Hosford 40th.
